The publication Orchid from the Bayou was eye opening. Cathryn (Kitty) Hoffpauir Fischer did a good job penalized honest, which really allowed the reader to acquire a better comprehension of what getting deaf in this time period meant. 1st, this book allowed me to see the negative method by which deaf everyone was perceived. This book is certainly not old by any means, and I was taken aback incidentally deaf kids were identified by not simply others in the community, but in many cases by their very own parents as well. The term " Deaf and Dumb” is one that I had not heard prior to, yet one that was used far too often. It is terrible to think this was used for all those deaf people, by not only a few of the more ignorant people that did not understand, but by doctors, teachers, and even the fogeys of deaf children. This kind of term can be offensive and plain wrong. It is very obvious to me that deaf folks are well educated and this their failure to hear is without affect on the ability to study. Before looking over this book I would personally have never guessed that so many people thought differently not so long ago.

Subsequent, after reading this article book I could see how prevalent it was to get deaf children to receive little to no schooling the moment Kitty was younger. Her aunt " stumbled” upon a school for the deaf, and had this kind of never took place Kitty would have never went to a school whatsoever. This seemed to be a very prevalent thing. If their child was foolish and they currently knew it then why send them to university anyway when it wouldn't go good?
